Sointula Artists Display in Port Hardy Gallery Show
~ by Kathleen Blohm -
Wonderfully creative masks adorn the main display wall of Cafe Guido in Port Hardy this month thanks to Davida Hudson and her gallery upstairs, the West Coast Community Craft Shop. This display is another of Davida’s regular themed shows open to North Island artists.
Davida sent out the following definition of mask to stimulate the artists and got that back in spades and more:
MASK – n.
1. A covering worn on the face to conceal one’s identity, as:
a. A covering, as of cloth, that has openings for the eyes, entirely or partly conceals the face, and is worn especially at a masquerade ball.
b. A grotesque or comical representation of a face, worn especially to frighten or amuse, as at Halloween.
c. A facial covering worn for ritual.
d. A figure of a head worn by actors in Greek and Roman drama to identify a character or trait and to amplify the voice.
This show is unrestricted, meaning that the format and materials are at the artist’s discretion, the subject is open to interpretation.
